Grey Man: AR15

Chapter Eleven GREY MAN: Grey Man hates clowns.

“Grey Man” my definition: Someone who does not draw attention from people but only because he chooses not to be noticed in order to gain a superior tactical advantage. On the other end of the spectrum are snowflakes and they are wanting of attention from anyone. In a grid down situation they will melt away.

Well, while Grey man is making his way through a city of unprepared zombies to the bug out location, the streets are getting more dangerous by the hour as people become more aware and desperate. The criminals are so callus in the big cities even before the grid went down that they wouldn't even spill their drink held in their left hand if they are shooting you with a gun in the right hand. It has been a couple days since Grey man has left his apartment. It has been slow going with the heavy pack and the winter weather. He can only travel about a third as fast as he predicted. His pack is heavier than when he trained in the fall because he needed extra preps due to the winter conditions. He had to bring a heavy sleeping bag, extra food, and heavy winter clothes along with the usual kit. He was still ahead of the hordes of people in the city who had not quite realized yet the long term seriousness of the event.

Grey man would have preferred not to be in the city but his job required him to spend time there. He had always prepared for an event that would cause a power outage and shut down transportation and communication in the big city, then humanity would shut down. He kept his bug out bag in good order but his winter load out was 73 lbs when he weighed it on his bathroom scale. Plus he expected real trouble so he brought a 200 round battle pack of XM855 green tip 5.56 X 45 mm ammo and for his pistol an extra 100 rounds of 10 mm 180 grain Federal hollow points. His weapon magazines were also full and he has 3 twenty round magazines for his AR15. His AR was presently loaded with a 30 round mag full of the good stuff. He had 2 extra of the 22 round magazines for his Glock 40 but the magazine that was in the pistol now was a 15 round flush fit and the whole package nestled discretely in a Serpa holster.

To avoid the cops that were shaking people down for their money and weapons and also the neighborhood watch groups that consisted of mostly teenagers that wanted to rob you, Grey man decided his route will take him through the old ghetto area of the city. He had carefully painted his back pack and equipment to make it look old and worn and removed anything shiny. He kept is AR15 in a bag that looked somewhat like a baseball equipment bag. He mounted tritium iron sights to keep the gun weight low. Besides in this bad weather the eyepiece of the optics could pack with snow. He tested his equipment on winter hunting trips. He packed an ACOG tritium scope in his bag if he needed longer range capability. In the ghetto he wanted to look like another homeless person that was not worth bothering with. At least in the ghetto if someone did bother him, there would be no reason not to defend himself. Also he could use the old condemned buildings along the way as shelter for the nights. It would be more difficult to find empty houses in the better neighborhoods. He hoped on the coldest nights he might even be able to share the heat of a burning barrel for a short time with the other down on their luck people in the hood but generally he planned to stay clear of crowds.

SHTF has been part of the bums life for a long time and they live in the ghetto so it must be doable there. Grey man was careful to wear a ski mask and gloves so his race would be harder to determine from a distance as he worked his way through the industrial ruins of the big city. Grey man knew that people were only about 9 meals away from being civilized to becoming dangerous predators. And he figures that time was close now. The established gangs were already busy looting and raping and were getting high on drugs but now more neighborhood gangs were forming for mutual protection and protecting their homes. There
wont be any one-on-one fights if there is trouble, he figures. Soon the people will be moving from the huge apartment buildings and back into the ghettos since that is preferable to apartment dwelling zombies.

It was getting toward evening and Grey man did not want to stumble through a dangerous ghetto with a flashlight making him a target from a long way off. So on this cloudy dark night he decided to look for an abandoned building to stay the night. He finds one across the street that looked empty but decides to inspect it for inhabitants. It is getting darker now so he decides to step up to the back porch and he removed his bagged AR15. It is mounted with a tactical weapon light, tritium night sights, and the rifle is much more effective in a close range fight if needed. Once inside he begins to look for signs of life, all is quiet and the dirt and dust was undisturbed for some time, one room had some trash and two hypodermic needles from some drug user. After checking all of the rooms he found some old tin cans and balanced them on the door knobs to act as an early warning alarm if someone jiggled the door. He also pulled some black thread from a sewing kit and tied it to tin cans and placed it across the back porch steps to serve as an alarm. He then found a place on the floor that was not to damaged and set up to rest for the night in front of an old fireplace. He planned to duck into the large fireplace of any shooting started outside the house to possibly prevent the entering bullets from perforating his hide. He relaxed on his bedroll to sleep and the tritium glow from his AR's iron sights kept nearby was a huge comfort.

Morning came and it was time to get moving to stay in front of the hordes of inner city refugees that would surely soon be coming into this area. Grey man was packed, AR 15 re-bagged, Glock 40 checked and holstered and leaving the house by dawn. It was interesting to think about the house and previous inhabitants. It was like a time machine that propelled him back to the 70's. Perhaps they had some good times back then, those who weren't in Vietnam anyway.
Grey man had not any trouble yet and so he was letting his guard down a little. Neglecting stealth for speed, anxious to get to the BOL. He was noticed. He looked up and saw three men in some sort of gang costume and he called them clowns to himself. They started to make their way toward Grey man so Grey man changed course to avoid them. It did not help and the men were headed straight for him. They were about 130 yards away and gaining on him. Grey man yelled, “Hey, what do you want?” They just look at each other and decided to stay quiet but kept coming walking faster and crossing a street. Next Grey man turned and was heading directly away from them but could not hope to out run them with his pack weighing him down so he decided to find cover and dropped his bag behind an old abandoned vehicle. I put the back pack on the ground between me and the front wheel of the car to help prevent bullets from hitting my feet from under the car. As they were coming he quickly pulled his AR from the bag from behind cover as he practiced many times.

He stayed on the hidden side of the vehicle front engine area with rifle out of sight of the bad guys. He then shouted, “Stop!” Which was his final warning to the three clowns. One took cover behind a tree and the other two pulled out pistols as they ran behind a brick building. Grey man was doubting his humane decision to not shoot and in letting them survive to take cover. He then shouted to ask them what they wanted and one responded that Grey man needed to pay tax, leave the backpack behind and leave. They were probably lieing and would certainly ambush him if he left cover; besides he needed the pack so the fight was on. I don't think the clowns saw my weapon yet and so were at a disadvantage, and he said a little prayer to all of the great men that helped him learn to shoot. Thank you Ed McGivern for demonstrating your fast and fancy revolver shooting so I know three moving targets are possible to hit. I hope I can borrow some speed from Jerry Miculek. I learned from all of them and was now all of these gunfighters in one package and it gave me confidence.

The threat was made by the clowns and they have at least two guns that I saw. They intend to do me harm or at least rob me of equipment and food that I needed to survive, I thought to myself, I am justified now, there will be no more chances, time to put rounds on target. If they present themselves again I will shoot. I remembered from Rob Leatham that sights are useless if you jerk the gun off target. I practiced Bob Vogel's Mozambique, two fast rounds in the chest and one in the head if the killer is at close range to overwhelm an armed bad guy. I tried to put it all together and then I just decided to clear my head and focus on fast accurate shooting.

A shot rang out! Oh Shit the fuckers just shot at me! Then another bullet clicked against the car I was using for cover, it could have just as easily whistled through my head. Sounded like a 9mm pistol. These three clowns were certainly members of the FSA, the free shit army. I was pissed off and ready to fight. I wanted to drill holes in their teeth and pack the holes with snow. I saw one of the clowns running to flank me. I popped up with the AR15, lead the chest of the running man about 6”, and fired three quick rounds. I got a piece of him. The green tip ammo worked well and the man spun and fell. He was not moving but with fighting three men I could not take the chance that he would be back in the fight so I watched him for another few seconds. I hoped the other two would take the hint and leave but they were cussing and wanting revenge. Both were still behind cover and about 80 yards away. I had the advantage since I had the only rifle in the fight so far. But I knew of the risk a good pistol shooter can pose at 80 yards, Jerry Miculek could break a small balloon at 1000 yds with a 9 mm, do not underestimate the lucky shot either. I did not expose much of my body.

I stayed behind the car and watched for movement. Suddenly one of the men stood up and stepped out from behind the cover of the tree and was emptying his pistol in my direction, two quick shots from my rifle put him in the dirt. Clown #3 was barely visible around the brick wall. I could see his hand and head barely exposed nervously looking back and forth. I needed a telescopic scope for that shot. Before I could squeeze one off using my iron sights, he ducked behind the wall completely and I did not see him for a while, I then saw him running away from the back of the building. I think it is over. I was shaking and felt weak and tired from the short fight. I shakily reloaded a fresh magazine into the rifle while looking around for more fight. All fights are ambushes and Grey man was the one playing catch-up in this fight. I was lucky that these guys were new to street fights. I wanted to leave the area quickly but again stopped and looked around as best as I could in case another bad guy was lurking, then grabbed my stuff, and started to move out rifle at the ready... Grateful to the great YouTube gunfighters that mentored me, I had survived my first gunfight with no horrible wounds.
I needed to move out fast. Since one got away I was certain that clown would tell a jury someday that the three clowns were just leaving church to entertain at a child's last wish birthday party that was dying of cancer when I ambushed them.

Attackers can choose to stop and run away but a defender has no choice but to win or die. Fuck those clowns, we all bleed red, Grey man moved out, he has a place to go.
