Best modern Rifle and handgun
Standardization has been proven to be the driving factor of a successful product for most technologies. The reason Microsoft became so popular was because most people used it making it the defacto standard. There are several spectacular self-defense rifles and handguns on the market today. The truth however is that over time for one reason or another it has been revealed that the current standard rifle and handgun without a doubt are the AR15 and Glock 19.
Since the AR15 has become the standard for American rifleman the availability of customization and spare parts and upgrades is considerable. On that subject, I will say my three favorite upgrades are an ambidextrous charging handle and the addition of a single point sling and tritium iron night sights.
When you ask the question as to why the AR15 has become the standard I will answer by saying that part of the reason is because the US military adopted it. Many people figure if the military uses it then it must be good and they are right. The military does test their equipment to a high degree.
The AR15 is a great choice because most people are not very good at handling recoil especially if you are talking about the average person who has not grown up around firearms. Since the AR15 is a light recoiling firearm due to the use of the .223 Remington or 5.56x45mm NATO cartridge it’s a great choice for all users.
The basic reasons the AR15 became so popular are that AR15 is very fast, accurate, light weight, reliable and chambers a very powerful cartridge for its size and capacity. Since the AR15 is the standard, the availability of accessories, ammunition, spare parts, upgrades, and different models or styles are very good.
The Glock has become the standard with absolutely no doubt. Almost all police departments in the United States authorize the Glock model handguns and for very good reason.
In the sidearm or handgun arena you will find that the Glock is probably the most reliable and most durable and most practical handgun that has ever been produced. When you combine the standard Glock handgun with the Standard 9mm cartridge you find an undeniable winner. After you match model with caliber, now you just need to match frame size and practicality with real world needs and you end up with the Glock 19.
I should note that most AR15’s are chambered in 5.56 NATO which means it can shoot both .223 and 5.56, but if you get one that is only chambered in .223 Remington then it can only shoot .223 Remington. I recommend the 5.56 chamber.
If you purchase an AR15 and a Glock 19 you probably have the best setup for any real world combat scenario you might come across.
A few suggestions: Purchase an AR15 with a removable carry handle with iron sights. That way you have options to use optics or iron sights with relative ease. You can always add an ACOG of your choice either to the flat top or to the carry handle. I prefer the ACOG that attaches to the carry handle because it allows me to use the standard Iron sights. I prefer the 2x version of the ACOG with the fiber optic which will carry your system out to 500 meters.
